This conservation building was built in 1928 as a police barrack. The building
was designed by a Public Works Department ( PWD ) Architect named F. Dorrington
Ward.
The original structure was actually built
separately as 3 different buildings ( during different times )
and later joined together forming an enclosed structure
with open courtyards in the centre of the building. The most recent tenant
in the building is the Singapore Traffic Police Headquarters. The
Traffic Police
vacated the building in 1999.

In
2005, the building was refurbished to become the only creative
hub in Singapore. As part of preserving the heritage of this monument
building, it is named “red dot Traffic”, as recognition to the
red dot design awards as well as the former occupant, the Singapore
Traffic Police.
As a creative hub in Singapore, red dot
Traffic houses creative companies of various disciplines. All the
tenants are located in offices that used to be the police investigation
rooms, rifle shooting range, as well as jail cells! The current
sheltered red dot design museum was once an open air courtyard.
At red dot Traffic you will be able to learn singing, dancing,
yoga and painting. It also has various food and beverage outlets
where you can sip coffee and surf the internet for free with wireless
internet access. One of the bars used to be the police armory while
another bar used to be the police canteen!
